Auto shop, S.C. bookshop honored

Water Star Motors, a family-owned auto repair shop in Santa Cruz, will be honored by Assemblyman John Laird, D-Santa Cruz, as "Small Business of the Year" in the 27th Assembly District.

"Water Star Motors is leading the way on the Central Coast on green business practices," said Laird.

The business, now in its 12th year, has been certified as a green business by Ecology Action. Henry and Lisa Carter are the owners.

In addition, Bookshop Santa Cruz owner Neal Coonerty will accept the 11th State Senate District's "Small Business of the Year" award at a luncheon in Sacramento today.

Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, announced the award Tuesday.

"Bookshop Santa Cruz is more than just a business," Simitian said in a statement. "It's a community center and gathering place"

This is the third year in a row Simitian has chosen to name an independent bookseller as Small Business of the Year in his district. Previous honorees include Kepler's in Menlo Park and Bell's Books in Palo Alto.

New wireless headset debuts

Plantronics has introduced a new wireless headset, CS70N, adding a microphone to eliminate distracting background noise. It's designed for traditional and IP deskphones.

Like its predecessor headset, it enables people to take calls up to 300 feet from their desk.

The manufacturer's suggested retail price for CS70N is $329.95. That's less than the CS70, which retailed for $399.95 when it came out a year ago.
