Former Cabrillo College and Santa Cruz High player Chris Sharp has committed to play basketball for Chico State.

"Chris is a great addition to our program," Chico State coach Greg Clink said in a statement Friday. "The thing that really excites us about him is that he is a proven winner and someone who has the ability to make an immediate impact on our program."

Sharp, a 6-foot-7, 230-pound post player, averaged 14 points and six rebounds as a sophomore center while leading Cabrillo [20-4] to the Coast Conference title. He earned first-team all-Coast Conference South honors this year. As a freshman, he was a second-team selection after averaging 13 points and 8.5 rebounds and helping the Seahawks nab a share of the conference title.

Sharp also started on the Santa Cruz High team that won the Division III state title his junior year. He finished his prep career as a two-time All-Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League selection.

Two other Cabrillo players also committed to four-year universities.

Aaron Pearson received a scholarship to Mid-Continent University in Mayfield, Ken. Pearson, a 6-0, 190-pound sophomore point guard from Baton Rouge, La., was a first-team all-conference selection.

Sidiki Straub, Sharp's backup in the post, received a scholarship to Mercer University in Atlanta. Straub is a 6-9, 220-pound sophomore from Hamburg, Germany.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Cabrillo College pitcher Ben Lackey helped the Nampa Falcons win a Boise [Idaho] Summer League game Wednesday.

In the Falcons' 4-3 win over the Ontario [Ore.] Mudcats, Lackey allowed four hits and three earned runs while striking out five over 7-plus innings. It was Lackey's first start with the team, and he received a no-decision.

Lackey will be a sophomore pitcher for Cabrillo next spring.

GOLF

Soquel golfer Sebastian Crampton, 12, took second place in the 12- and 13-year-olds division at the Oakland Junior Open at Lake Chabot.

Crampton had three birdies and finished with a 6-over 78 as temperatures reached as high as 107 degrees in the Bay Area.

Crampton is in the sixth grade at New Brighton Middle School.

• Gary Allyne hit two hole-in-ones within a nine-day span at Boulder Creek Golf and Country Club in April.

Allyne hit the first on No. 10 on April 15 and the second on No. 9 on April 24. They were the second and third career holes-in-one, respectively for Allyne, who lives in Scotts Valley.

"It took me 29 years to get the first one, 23 years to get the second and nine days to get the third," said the 75-year-old Allyne.

Both feats were witnessed by Allyne's weekly golfing partners: Bob Roth, 88, and Win Whitney, 86.

MEN'S SOCCER

The Santa Cruz County Breakers semi-pro team is in pursuit of the playoffs.

Midway through the season, the Breakers are 3-0-1 and lead the Northwest Conference of the National Premier Soccer League. The winner of the conference will advance to play the Southwest Conference champion in a regional match. The winner of that game will advance to play in the NPSL national finals on the East Coast on Aug. 1-3.

The Breakers have three home games remaining. The first is 5 p.m. Sunday against conference foe Real San Jose. Other home games include June 29 against the San Francisco Glens at 5 p.m. and July 11 at 7:30 p.m. against Real San Jose. All home games will be played at Cabrillo College.

LITTLE LEAGUE

Watsonville American defeated the Scotts Valley Braves 10-9 in District 39 Majors Tournament of Champions Little League action on Friday night at Harvey West Park.

In late game, Aptos won over the San Juan Aromas Reds 6-5. Aptos moves on to face the Santa Cruz National Dodgers today at 1 p.m. at Harvey West Field 1.
