The Santa Cruz County Breakers semi-pro soccer team gave the hometown fans what they wanted in Friday night's home finale: a win. The Breakers toppled Real San Jose 3-1 at Cabrillo College.

Ivan Campos, Rolando Rodriguez and Allan Diaz all scored goals for Santa Cruz, which never trailed in the game.

Despite the win -- the team's second of the year against its rival from over the hill -- the best the Breakers can hope for at this point in the season is a second-place finish in the Northwest Conference. Even if the Breakers [6-1-2] win their season finale Sunday, they will still only have 23 points, one less than conference-leader Sonoma Sol's current total.

The Breakers battled to a 2-2 tie with the Sol -- the defending conference champions -- on July 5. The Breakers held the lead well into the first half but couldn't hold onto it, losing their shot at the conference title and a playoff berth.

"We had a chance against Sonoma," Breakers head coach Mike Runeare said. "I feel like we should have won that one, but it was close one way or the other."

In their two previous meetings this season, the Sol handed Santa Cruz its only loss and the teams played to a 1-1 tie in Santa Cruz.

"That's why we had to win last week," Runeare said. "We tied them twice and they beat us once. It's unfortunate we didn't keep the lead.

"I think this season was another step towards becoming a championship team," he added. "Last year was our first year. This year I thought we had more consistency and were a better team. Now the team understands what it takes in order to win championship. Each year we get a step closer."

The Breakers play the Salinas Samba at 5 p.m Sunday at Watsonville High in their final game of the season.
