An upside-down, double-decker, topsy-turvy school bus attracted a crowd at the downtown Santa Cruz farmers market on Wednesday, as its passengers promoted their mission of planting an organic farm at the White House.
"Our primary focus, of course, is the need for our next president to lead by example and eat right," said Daniel Bowman Simon, a farmer with TheWhoFarm and a passenger on the bus. "We need somebody who eats a good breakfast every day."
Simon and others with TheWhoFarm are traveling the nation promoting their mission. The inside of their bus is plastered with magnets and postcards from farmers markets and cities they have visited around the country, and Chicago Cubs stickers. Strings of small American flags hang from the ceiling, and bicycles are suspended from the bus walls.
Simon said his group is nonpartisan and would work with either John McCain or Barack Obama to get the farm planted.
On Wednesday, Simon was preparing lemonade to sell to raise gas money to continue on TheWhoFarm's journey. He said the group also stopped by the organic farm at UC Santa Cruz, to learn about the growers' techniques and how to reach out to schoolchildren that visit.
Santa Cruz resident Satyam Vella, 49, said he was encouraged by TheWhoFarm's efforts.
"You're not going to have people caring about the environment as much as they do their own personal health," Vella said. "What a rocket idea."
