The state Department of Justice crime lab is fast-tracking its analysis of fingerprints and DNA evidence collected after Wednesday's rape and robbery of a harbor coffee shop employee.

No one has been arrested and Santa Cruz police detectives reported Thursday they have no suspects. However, officers returned to the Santa Cruz Small Craft Harbor and surrounding area to interview people and put up posters that include a sketch of the rapist.

"This is, and will remain, a top priority," police spokesman Zach Friend said.

Friend said police have gotten many tips, describing them as "basic information."

The 24-year-old Santa Cruz woman had unlocked the front door of The Kind Grind and was preparing for its 6:30 a.m. opening when a man snuck in and attacked her around 6 a.m. Wednesday, according to police. He threatened her with a knife, raped her and tried to lock her in a freezer, then emptied the register and fled.

"There is no evidence that the attacker knew the victim or that she was specifically targeted," he said.

The attacker is described as a Latino, younger than 25, about 5 feet 9 inches tall with close-shaved hair, wearing a blue T-shirt and a black hooded sweatshirt with light-colored writing, according to police.

The attack rocked the harbor-area.

"I couldn't believe it. I was just really shocked," said Claudia Graziano, who lives nearby and goes by the cafe most days. "It just seems completely out of character for this neighborhood and for Santa Cruz."

Port Director Brian Foss, who oversees Harbor Police, said nothing like the attack had ever occurred at the 90-acre harbor.

"It's normally a quiet little place, a refuge," Foss said. "We're evaluating our systems and our place here. Everything's up for review."

Mornings at the harbor are usually quiet -- most of the crime reported occurs overnight -- and there are people around, according to Foss. Some live aboard their boats and fishermen arrive early to go out on the bay.

Officers on Wednesday found a fillet knife believed to be used in the attack in a harbor parking lot trash can. A Seabright-area business turned in a blue shirt found in a trash can. It may have belonged to the attacker, Friend said.

"Our CSI team successfully obtained a number of latent prints from the business and DNA evidence," he said.

A surveillance video taken from nearby businesses gave no clues, Friend said. A second video was turned over Thursday afternoon.

A search of registered sex offenders in the area yielded no suspects, so detectives expanded their net to include probationers and parolees, Friend said.

Police ask anyone near the east side of the harbor around 6 a.m. Wednesday to call 420-5820 or the anonymous tip line at 420-5995.

Harbor Police can be reached at 474-6161 during business hours and 212-4261 after hours.

They're also available on Channel 9 or 16 on VHF radio. Foss said officers are available to walk women to their vehicles.
